LONDON — Processor vendor Advanced Micro Devices Inc. has started running wafers through Fab36, the company's 300-mm wafer fab located in Dresden, Germany and is on course to have commercial production in 2006, according to Tom Sonderman, the company's director of APM technologies. "We are qualifying equipment as we speak. Fab36 was designed to be a 65-nm from the start. We are making great strides with IBM and our SRAM yields are hitting all our milestones," Sonderman told EE Times in a telephone interview. "The whole idea is to begin to process 65-nm in the middle of 2005 and bring it into production in 2006. We're certainly on schedule." Sonderman said wafers first ran in Fab36 in March 2005 and that first "wafer outs" would occur in the second-half of 2005. He added that only 300-mm wafers would be run at Fab36 in Dresden although the neighboring wafer fab — Fab30 — runs a 90-nm SOI manufacturing process on 200-mm diameter wafers.

AMD's dual-core Opteron due this month

Advanced Micro Devices is expected to launch new Opteron chips later this month that combine dual processing engines on a single slice of silicon, CNET News.com has learned.

AMD will announce at an event on April 21 in New York that the first dual-core Opteron processors are available, months ahead of schedule, sources familiar with the situation said. The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based chipmaker also is expected to announce its dual-core chips for personal computers will go on sale in June.

In an attempt to encourage rapid adoption, AMD will sell some of the new chips at the same prices as the corresponding single-core models they'll replace, a source familiar with the products said. The company is expected to first release its high-end and more expensive 800 series Opterons, which are geared for servers with four or eight chips, with lower-end 200 series models coming in May.

Intel bilang bakal transisi ke 65nm. AMD bilang, "lagi testing tuh".
Intel bilang 90nm panas.. AMD bilang, "lebih dingin kok, lebih kenceng lagi"
Intel baru ngomongin, AMD udah pajang running version. Sampe Intel suruh polisi ngusir AMD.. Malu kali ya...
Intel bilang mau mempercepat produksi dual core. AMD bilang, dipercepat? Oh.. ok.. bulan ini aja.. tgl 21 udah widely available.
