1) Intel estimated there are 25% of the market looking for a simple PC,
basically use for internet, email, office software such as words, excels,
normal movie download (streaming), photo review.....and system cost below
US$299
2) Intel defined this new segment named nettop. It is not duplicate or
competiting with the entry level desk top now dominated by the 945 chipset.
Nettop is offering a simple machine, not upgradeable, easy operation.... for
normal 945 desktop platform, it is upgradeable for gammer , (using addon
VGA).
3) Intel has define two target customer group: A) Primary PC, the first PC
that need very good cost, it is more for developing country like India,
Vietnam, Philippines, Eastern Europe.... (the area strong with entry level
system); B) the Secondary PC, is for the one who has already a good PC can
play DX10 games, Blueray DVD..... but they do need a second PC at good cost
for just normal use, say, internet, email checking...... that is for
developped country, like Europe, HK, Japan..... espeically for house wife
using, so that she will not share the main PC with her son or husband....
4) J&W has defined two more target customer: A) corporate account, to use in
office. It is an ideal system cause it is noiseless (no fan need), green
power (low power), small (save space), and boss doesnt like staff spend
their time on games during office hour... B) the industry use, such as
cashier machine, gambling machine........
5) J&W has 2 version, A) family version, with 2 DIMM, DVI, 6 USB.... B)
Office version/Industry version, with only 1 DIMM, Parrallel Port, Serial
Port.....
6) the market has misunderstand that the Nettop means low performance, which
is not true, it has the same performance as the 945 chipset, but only
different is.... Nettop not allow for future upgrade, no PCIE 16X slot (no
VGA upgrade), CPU on board without socket (no CPU upgrade). Intel make this
limitation is trying not to confuse the normal entry level platform....
Pros of Atom
1) small board size 17cm x 17cm, fit for mini ITX case as well as normal
Micro ATX case
2) low power, 150W is more than enough
3) low temperature, no cpu fan needed
4) enough performance, 945 chipset based, VGA integraded supporting DX9.
5) lower board cost (integrated with cpu) target below US$299 retail system
price
6) Intel platform, in most of the countries, Intel platform has more than
85% market share against AMD platform (India has more than 95%)
7) only available in selected Intel Partner, China has only 2 selected
partner, J&W is one of them. it avoid the cheap stuff from the no name
chinese factory.
Cons of Atom solution
1) market may have a wrong message that Atom is only low performance
system.... need more marketing education, further define the nettop concept
2) market may compare the cost with the lowest AMD platform with the lowest
AMD cpu...Intel is Intel, need not to compare with AMD platform....
3) due to the mini ITX case (about US$2X with PS) current cost is higher
then the low end micro ATX case (about US$16 with remark PS) this cost
different may offset the cost saving in the small Atom board.... but the
small size is the advantage of the Atom. If the case cost really the matter,
then customer may use the standard Micro ATX case
