In our Industry Insider Report from yesterday, we pointed out that DDR2 would take some time to mature in the market until AMD adopts the standard. This is certainly the case in the enthusiast market; AMD is the force behind DDR and will remain that way until it adopts a newer standard. However, a recent discussion with an industry source seems to hint otherwise. Although such information is never set in stone, educated speculations from industry insiders usually tend to be somewhere close to the final plans of a particular company.

According to the source, AMD has other plans with DDR and the company will possibly make advancements in this sector. The source also said that AMD might be going its own way by not following Intel with their DDR2 implementations. Instead, the world’s second largest chipmaker may go straight to DDR3 or XDR in hopes of adopting a better architecture. You see, DDR2 was a poor design to begin with, but considering that Intel has been making quite a few mistakes after its Prescott and i915/i925 launch, no one should be surprised.

Knowing Intel’s exclusive partnerships with Dell, Gateway and other OEMs, Intel can usually get away with making mistakes like that, since majority of the PC buying population consists of regular computer users who care less about memory performance than the overall computing experience.

The source revealed that AMD could move to the DDR3 standard, assuming it skips DDR2, sometime within the next 12 months. And until AMD stays with DDR, there’s no drop in market share in this area. It will continue to lead as a strong standard.

The industry insider also reported that DDR3 may very well have high latencies, but due to its immensity in bandwidth, the performance will be quite comparable to DDR2. Other sources confirmed that DDR3 has already started hitting initial production lines for prototypes.

Should AMD adopt the DDR3 standard, Intel will get hit in the enthusiast market again, but Intel may end up following AMD with memory standards in the end.

Sebaiknya pindah ke XDR aja,kinerja mirip RAMBUS dan dipakai di PS3.
DDR3 utk kompatibilitas.
